Is It a Dental Emergency?

Not every dental problem needs same-day attention, but some absolutely do. Here's how to tell the difference.

Needs urgent same-day care

Severe toothache not relieved by painkillers

Knocked-out or displaced tooth

Dental abscess with swelling or fever

Lost filling exposing sensitive dentine

Broken tooth causing sharp pain

Facial or jaw swelling spreading fast

Uncontrolled bleeding from the mouth

Can wait for a routine appointment

Mild toothache that comes and goes

Cracked or chipped tooth with no pain

Cosmetic concerns or staining

General discomfort around a crown

Sensitivity to hot or cold only

Lost filling with no sensitivity

Important: If you experience difficulty breathing, swallowing, or rapidly spreading swelling around the jaw or neck, call 999 immediately or go to A&E. This could indicate a life-threatening infection.

Common Dental Emergencies Explained

Click any condition below to find out what to do while you wait for your appointment.

Severe Toothache
Pain that won't go away with painkillers

Severe, persistent toothache is often a sign of infection, deep decay, or a cracked tooth. It requires professional assessment. It won't resolve on its own.

What to do right now

  • Take over-the-counter pain relief if suitable for you, do not exceed the recommended dose

  • Rinse with warm salt water to reduce inflammation

  • Avoid very hot, cold, or sweet foods which may trigger the pain

  • Do not place aspirin directly on the tooth or gum, it can burn soft tissue

  • Submit your booking request above and we will contact you to confirm a slot

Knocked-Out Tooth
Adult tooth dislodged from its socket

A knocked-out adult tooth can sometimes be saved if you act quickly and correctly. Time is critical. Ideally you need to be seen within 30–60 minutes.

What to do right now:

  1. Pick the tooth up by the crown (the white part) do not touch the root

  2. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly under cold water, do not scrub it

  3. If possible, gently place the tooth back into the socket and hold it there

  4. If you cannot reinsert it, store it in a small container of cold milk

  5. Submit your request immediately and note "knocked-out tooth", we will prioritise your call

Note: this guidance applies to adult teeth only. A knocked-out baby tooth should not be reinserted, contact us for advice.

Dental Abscess or Swelling
Swelling, pus, fever, or throbbing pain

A dental abscess is a bacterial infection that causes a pocket of pus to form. It is a serious condition that will not get better without treatment and can spread if left untreated.

Symptoms include: severe throbbing pain, facial or gum swelling, sensitivity to pressure, fever, a bad taste or smell, or difficulty opening the mouth.

What to do right now:

  1. Take pain relief (ibuprofen is particularly effective as it reduces inflammation)

  2. Rinse with warm salt water 2–3 times a day to help draw infection

  3. Do not attempt to drain the abscess yourself

  4. Submit your booking request urgently, noting that you have swelling or possible abscess

  5. If swelling spreads to your jaw, neck, or eye area, or you have difficulty breathing call 999 immediately

Lost Filling or Crown
Restoration has fallen out or come loose

A lost filling or crown exposes the underlying tooth to bacteria, temperature sensitivity, and further damage. It should be restored promptly.

What to do right now:

  1. Keep the area clean, rinse gently after eating

  2. If your crown has come off intact, store it safely, we may be able to recement it

  3. Avoid chewing on the affected side to prevent further damage

  4. You can use a temporary filling paste from a pharmacy (e.g. Dentemp) as a short-term measure

  5. Do not use household glue or superglue under any circumstances

  6. Submit your request and select "Lost Filling or Crown" as your issue

Uncontrolled Bleeding
Bleeding from the mouth that won't stop

Some bleeding after a tooth extraction or injury is normal. However, if firm pressure for 10–15 minutes does not stop the bleeding, you need urgent help.

What to do right now:

  1. Apply firm, continuous pressure to the area using clean gauze or a folded cloth

  2. Bite down firmly and hold for at least 10–15 minutes without checking

  3. Avoid rinsing, spitting forcefully, or hot drinks, these dislodge clots

  4. If bleeding continues after 15 minutes of sustained pressure, contact us immediately or go to A&E

Broken or Chipped Tooth
Tooth has fractured, causing pain or sharp edges

Broken teeth can range from minor chips to major fractures exposing the nerve. Even a chip with no pain should be assessed, as sharp edges can cut the tongue or cheek and minor fractures can worsen.

What to do right now:

  1. Rinse your mouth with warm water to keep it clean

  2. If you find the broken fragment, keep it, bring it to your appointment

  3. Apply gentle pressure with gauze if there is any bleeding

  4. Use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek to reduce swelling

  5. Avoid very hard or crunchy foods until you are seen

  6. Submit your booking request and enter "Broken or Chipped Tooth" as your issue

How quickly will I hear back after submitting the form?

During practice hours (Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 7pm depending on the day), we aim to respond to all requests within 2 hours. Requests submitted outside practice hours will be picked up first thing the next working day. We will contact you by phone or email to confirm your appointment slot.

Can I get a same-day appointment?

We reserve emergency slots daily for urgent cases. Same-day appointments are subject to availability. If you have a genuine emergency such as a knocked-out tooth, severe abscess, or uncontrolled bleeding, please indicate this clearly in the form and we will prioritise your request accordingly.

What does the £99.99 fee cover?

The emergency assessment fee covers your initial consultation, clinical examination of the affected area, and any dental X-rays required to diagnose the problem. If further treatment is needed (fillings, extractions, root canal, etc.), we will provide a full written estimate before starting — there is no obligation to proceed with further treatment on the day.
